Tutorial blogs

Types of blogs

A hand cups a complex set of interlocking gears

Photos, video, sound, screen capture, and links make blogs great platforms for collections of "how to" posts on a given subject.

(Notice I said collections, plural.)

If you have expertise to share, a blog can be the ideal hub.

As a bonus, I guarantee that blogging will sharpen your own understanding of your subject matter.

Tutorial or instruction blogs are close relations of the catalog.

Both present stand-alone reports that may also be related to other content, and both handle newcomers well.

Tutorial considerations

More than any other form, the tutorial blog rests firmly on the quality of the individual posts. Craft them well.

Tutorials often build on or relate to other tutorials. You may offer a multi-part series.

Such blogs can use links and labels to group related posts into collections.

You can organize these with navigational features that link their posts into a coherent unit.

As of this writing, for instance, this blog hosts a primer about Blogger that is organized around a mini "home page" with an introduction and a table of contents.

The page has a link in the row of tabs at the top of the blog, and the posts are sequentially organized with next-previous links at the bottom of each post page.

Making your posts easy to find will make your blog easy to use.
